2º part of the porfiriato strip, not much to ramble about except that I´m really busy lately.

POSTAL MEXICO AND USA DURING THE PORFIRIATO [link]


----------------------------------------- Spanish–USA War

In 1898 when Phillipines, Puerto Rico and Cuba fought with Spain for independence USA "helped them" only to invade them after (as mentioned in the strip Cuba had a treaty but Phillipines and Puerto Rico didn´t) so instead of independence they got under someone elses domain, in fact during for that war USA´s president asked Porfirio DIaz to send troops for the war, (just like Bush wanted México to send troops to Irak/Afganistan) it was hate at first sight , well, more hate than beffore as Porfirio Diaz being a good mexican hated USA before hand and on basis (remmember all those stolen territories and unjust treaties?) , his other very famous phrase was "Poor México so far from god and so close to USA".

Needless to say latins are not happy about Puerto Rico´s situation (and they has been in that for a long time) , because we latins consider Puerto Rico as an "invaded latin nation" , and being latin makes puertoriqueños family to us, people there strives for self determination and current USA president OBAMA says that he supports it, however transnational companies and polititians argue and difficult things for Puerto Rico.

Yes, the peso was more valuable than the dollar, but lets also remmember that coins were gold and silver in those times, I will make some works regarding economy in general (not only México) later on.

This is probably the most memorable/remmembered phrase said by Mr. President Don Jose de la Cruz Porfirio Diaz Mori, it was during his first period when Sebastian Lerdo de Tejada (former president after Juarez) wanted to cause another uprising in state of Veracruz, Diaz´s general send note of this to Don Porfirio and Don Porfirio answered with this message, and it was executed efficiently in the act. that became the main policy regarding any insurrection or unfavorable response, so while hacendados and other powerful people were being pacified with bribes and economical/political means the general population was being forced to behave, besides all the progress the main notable thing about the porfiriato was that it managed to pacify and stabilize the country (by any and every means nessesary),hader than herding cats but Don Porfirio managed it.

-----------------------------RAYA STORES

Those were general stores inside haciendas where peones (workers) were swindled, debts were hereditary, work was basically slavery in everything but name, each hacienda had its own coin not usable anywere else.... just like the modern electronic/credit cards of an specific store. if you want to now more please ask me in detail or read the book "México barbaro".

------------------------------CANANEA AND RIO BLANCO STRIKES

Any strikes were usually supresed/broken by force, however this 2 were so brutally repressed that they became one of the first sparks to ignite the mexican revolution.
