WHAT HAPPENED?
Internet went on strike in January 2012, the reason were 2 law proposals in USA, S.O.P.A. and P.I.P.A. (stop online piracy act, SOPA is a House bill, while PIPA is in the Senate , here´s what the BBC says about it www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-… ), you already know about this , but to sum them , they mean that USA´s goverment would be able to not only censor but also delete entire sites that hold anything copyrighted and not only the infrigted piece, that and force browsers to remove links and so on, not only in USA, but violating sovereignty of other countries despite all the other countries.
That would have meant no fanart, no fanfiction, no background music from the movie/series/games/animes, etc on fanmade videos or animations, no "inspired" art... No critics or comments about a piece of art you can´t even see without violating copyrights.
People everywhere (devianart example zandkfan4ever57.deviantart.com… ) were not happy about this and not only protested but acted, along with artpieces, blogs, editorials, news, videos and protests, millions of signatures were gathered and companies and sites like Google , Amazon , Yahoo , Wikipedia, Reddit and eBay either went blank for one day or took measures to protest. Politicians in Washington, D.C., reported being flooded with calls and emails—and several publicly backed away from SOPA and PIPA before day's end. Also companies that originally supported the bill sufered heavy loses, for example GoDaddy.com , one of the most popular domain holders initially supported the act, soon thousands of domains trasfered somewhere else, online and offline movies and music sales dropped and flames became inferno for those approving this acts.
Before the bill was voted it had already losed open support, but one thing increaded the anger of Internet users even more, the FBI closed Megaupload (and some other sites) and arrested some of its employes in New Zedland (Megaupload was a Hong Kong-based site with around 150 million users and 50 million daily hits), 15 min laters hackers everywhere (thanks Anonymous) attacked sites like the USA´s department of justice (it took like 7 min to take down the site) , the FBI, the white house, Motion Picture Association of America (stupid name because as far as I now it involves only USA), Universal musci and others. (news here www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-… and mx.noticias.yahoo.com/eeuu-cie… ) .
After all that the voting in USA was "posponed indefinitely. One official statement (that angers me) apparently by Smith, a Texas Republican in the House of Representatives was: "It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products." (retalaitng comments were made in all the world regarding this , starting on the America is a continent not a single country, following this like USA steals cientific merits, intelectual property, etc from everywhere... and then comments went really high rating, and many of those were justified -_-0)
SOPA and PIPA explained in how theya re adressed in congress penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/…
WHY IS IT NOT OVER YET?
Posponed indefinitely does not means that it was closed much less forgotten, and be sure as hell thay they will either change this or try to pass other bills, after all p owerful publishers and producers of news and entertainment content—including News Corp., Time Warner Inc. and Walt Disney Co.—are pushing back with their own media campaigns. The Motion Picture Association of America, headed by former Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, insists that billions of dollars are at stake (in his own pockets probably).
There are other bills to come or that are already on their way, and they are already targeting TARINGA ( mx.noticias.yahoo.com/cierre-m… ).
And ACTA is even worse!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=e24USq… (spanish) www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCCQhk… (english) more detailed info on it proyectofedora.org/mexico/2010…
